How to spot a fake Rolex: what professionals check

Counterfeits have become very good. These are the details a trained eye examines first, and why only a full inspection settles the question.

Modern counterfeits can fool most people at a glance, and some even use genuine parts. No single check proves a watch is authentic. Professionals look at many details together and, when in doubt, open the case. Use the points below to know what questions to ask, not as a replacement for an expert inspection.

1. The date magnifier

On models with a Cyclops lens, Rolex magnifies the date about two and a half times, and the date should fill most of the window and sit perfectly centered. A weak or off-center magnification is a common warning sign.

2. Printing and applied markers

Under a loupe, genuine dial printing is crisp, evenly spaced and consistent in thickness. Applied markers are cleanly finished with no glue residue or rough edges, and the lume is evenly applied.

3. The rehaut and serial numbers

Most modern Rolex watches have the brand name engraved around the inner bezel ring, with the serial number at six o’clock. Engraving should be sharp and aligned precisely with the minute markers. Serial and reference numbers must match the model and its production period.

4. Weight, bracelet and clasp

Genuine bracelets feel solid, with tight tolerances and no rattle. Clasp engravings and codes should be clean and consistent with the model year.

5. The movement

The most reliable test is opening the case. A specialist checks the caliber, its finishing and its performance on a timing machine. This is the step that catches the best fakes and the “frankenwatches” built from mixed parts.

Buy from someone who will stand behind it

Papers can be faked too, so treat them as supporting evidence, not proof. The safest path is buying from an established dealer who inspects every piece, lets you see it in person and offers a warranty.
